This is ridiculous. God gave man dominion over all animals. The animals you speak of were put on earth to feed us. - See 5 more comments ...

Julie - I could possibly agree that God did not put animals on this earth for humans to eat. Gen. 1:26 through 2:9 make no mention of eating animals. It IS mentioned three times that the plants were good for food. Here's the problem though - man choose not to obey God. As a result of this disobedience, "The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them." Gen. 3:21 NIV. The eating of animals is mentioned plenty of times in the Bible. If you believe that Jesus is God, how could it have been ok for Him to eat meat, but not us? As for killing animals for pleasure: There are probably very few individuals who would agree with this. HOWEVER - killing animals for sacrifice is entirely different, and the topic for another post. BUT - could someone explain how my Thanksgiving turkey is "killing for pleasure?" Kathy - God? Karma? you can't pick and choose parts from different religions to suit your needs. Well I guess if you're a Unitarian Universalist..... AND here's another question: Why do you folks believe is it ok for a non-human animal to kill and eat another animal, but not for humans to eat animals? -

Can't believe I'm actually getting into this...but here goes: 1) "Man chose not to obey God..." I'm not a Christian, I am a Buddhist, so my view will certainly contradict yours at points. But, as a Buddhist, my spiritual view is that we need to create heaven on earth. Christians, it seems to me, would want to work to make Earth as close as possible to the Paradise God created. 2) "How could it have been okay for Him to eat meat, but not us". Necessity. Simple as that. In Biblical times, they ate meat very rarely, and it was to supplement in their diets what they couldn't get otherwise. We aren't in that situation any more. We can choose what we eat, and we have an ethical obligation to eat the least cruel diet that is possible. 3) "explain how my Thanksgiving turkey is 'killing for pleasure' " . Again, because it is not necessary. You are not eating a turkey on Thanksgiving out of need, you are eating it because you want to. That makes it an act of pleasure, and just as morally reprehensible as torturing a dog for pleasure. 4) "Why is it okay for a non-human animal to kill and eat another animal?" Again, necessity. Tigers need animal flesh to survive. We don't need to eat animals to be healthy; in fact, we are generally healthier without them. God wants us to treat ourselves well, correct? If a vegan diet is the one that makes us the best stewards of the earth, is the least cruel to animals, AND is the healthiest, why would God oppose that? -Michael (Same person who runs the Farm Animal Rights Movement account)
