Stay Home to Watch HOME This Weekend

Published June 12, 2009 @ 08:40AM PT

Lots and lots of people have been talking--raving, in many cases--about the documentary HOME. I planned to wait until I'd watched it myself to post about it, but given that time got away from me, and the chance to view it online for free is almost up, I'll have to change my plans--I want to be sure you get to see it too. You have just until June 14, this Sunday, to catch it online for free at YouTube (I assume it will be available all the way through Sunday, but I'm really not clear on that detail).

From the synopsis:

Marc Bekoff on Animals, Animal Emotions, Science, and More

Published May 22, 2009 @ 07:50AM PT

I adore Marc Bekoff. He's a brilliant biologist and ethologist, a compassionate and dedicated animal advocate, and a compelling author. I've been moved and educated by his books, and by chance, I was lucky enough to be one of the copyeditors on the wonderful four-volume Encyclopedia of Human-Animal Relationships he edited a few years ago. This video marks the first time I've actually had the chance to see him speak, even via video. Watch.

Kids, Compassion, and Ruby Roth on Why We Don't Eat Animals

Published May 19, 2009 @ 07:04AM PT

Last week was Children's Book Week. And though I meant to write this last week, as a timely post to coincide with that celebration, I forgot until Kelly of easyVegan.info posted on one of the very books I was going to post about (and, as it turns out, the only book I'm going to post about today beyond general discussion about kids, compassion, and books--because this post got crazy-long). I learned of Ruby Roth's That's Why We Don't Eat Animals about two months ago, via the same source as Kelly--Vegan Dad. And as someone who loves kids, books, and kids' books, and who knows the importance of the third for the first, I was immediately excited and enthralled.

New Video from Mercy for Animals

Published May 11, 2009 @ 12:33PM PT

Nathan Runkle, founder of Mercy for Animals (which also operates ChooseVeg.com), just sent out the word that the nonprofit has a new video. Using their own words as well as the famous words of others, they explain why animal rights advocates do--and should do--what they do, why they are vegan, and more. Check it out (no graphic images at all--just lots of lovely people):

Cruelty-Free Shopping: Take the Leap

Published April 21, 2009 @ 10:41AM PT

I wouldn't normally direct you to two videos in one day, but this new video from the American Anti-Vivisection Society, released in conjunction with World Week for Animals in Laboratories, warrants sharing. How many animals are being tortured for your body-care products, cosmetics, household cleaners, and other products every day? And when the number and availability of just-as-good and better products not tested on animals is ever-increasing, how can anyone justify still using the products for which countless animals were tortured and killed?

Everything from your shampoo to your dusting spray to your sweetener might have been tested on animals. Tell companies you're not OK with that by purchasing only products that weren't tested on animals and that include no animal ingredients. Check labels, do research, and take a stand with your purchases. See the video below (it is not at all graphic--no images of actual animals or experiments).

More on World Week for Animals in Laboratories tomorrow.

Have Plans on Earth Day? Watch This

Published April 21, 2009 @ 06:33AM PT

I assume that even if you're not planning to celebrate Earth Day tomorrow with a party or by attending an event, you're at least going to be going about your life as usual on Earth Day, right? I mean, you're still going to at the very least eat at some point, right? And on Earth Day and every day, you care about the planet and your effects on it, right? Then watch this. The link has been floating around for a while, but I never watched it until Mary Martin of Animal Person posted it the other day because, for some reason, I had the idea that it was a specific video I'd already seen a dozen times. I was wrong; this one was new to me.

Watch. It covers a lot of issues, with compelling images of what's happening around--and to--this world of ours and how it's happening.

I will make but one remark on the video's message, the same one I've made at other times: the issues attributed to "beef" production are dairy issues too. Replacing omnivorism with vegetarianism and replacing flesh intake with increased dairy and egg intake isn't a solution--it doesn't reduce your environmental footprint nearly as much as cutting out animal products altogether, and it doesn't reduce suffering either if your reasons for cutting out flesh intake are ethical; it just moves the suffering to dairy cows, veal calves, egg-laying hens, and baby male chicks.

Eating Goats with Glee, Rescuing Them with Compassion

Published April 14, 2009 @ 06:38AM PT

[Note: Animal lovers who may be dismayed by the first half of the post, stick with me until the end, OK? There's something you'll want to see there.]

In my roundup of recent posts from around the animal rights and vegan blogosphere last week, I left out three intentionally--because they deserved a post of their own: "How I Learned to Dislike Henry Alford" from Animal Person and "The joy of discovering a new species to slaughter and consume" and "letters, letters, letters" from the Reformed Fast Food Mascot. Both bloggers were writing in response to a New York Times article titled "How I Learned to Love Goat Meat."
