Vote for Animal Rights Changemakers
Published October 23, 2009 @ 10:30AM PT

In the past few weeks, even though I've neglected to write about it, you've possibly nevertheless seen a new section of Change.org devoted to "Changemakers," where you can vote for various people of prominence within individual causes "who have demonstrated the ability to create change on one or more issues of importance." Eventually, some of these folks "will be invited to periodically write on an issue they’re passionate about and have their content featured on Change.org." See the FAQ here.
You have 10 votes to use across the Changemakers voting (i.e., not 10 votes per cause), and you can nominate new people as well as vote for some of the nominees already listed in the Animal Rights category, including the fellas pictured above, for example (click on the names to vote):
- Tom Regan, the prominent and eloquent animal rights philosopher, professor, cofounder (with wife Nancy Regan) of the Culture & Animals Foundation, and author whom we owe for such important books as The Case for Animal Rights and Empty Cages and such moving, compelling oratory as that featured in this video
- Paul Watson, the dedicated, passionate, and frankly intrepid founder of Sea Shepherd, who is better known in the mainstream now than ever before, given the success of the Whale Wars series on Animal Planet these last couple years, and who is outspoken and unyielding in his advocacy for not only whales, but all animals
Additional current nominees include Defenders of Wildlife president Rodger Schlickeisen; author, law professor, and philosopher Gary Francione; retired TV host and longtime animal advocate Bob Barker; PETA president Ingrid Newkirk; Farm Sanctuary president Gene Baur; dolphin advocate Ric O'Barry; and others.
I know that animal rights advocates will be perplexed by the inclusion of some nominees in the animal rights category. I can recommend only that advocates shrug it off and vote for whom they do believe to be true, active "changemakers" for animal rights and that readers submit nominations for folks they think should be included but aren't. Please note that there's a separate Wildlife category as well.

Their info is incorrect about some of these candidates. Judy Wicks (what is she doing there anyway?), for example, sold The White Dog Cafe this year to someone who isn't about keeping up her "ideals" at all. They no longer source all produce in season from local farms, and I don't know if they even get their flesh from "humane" farms anymore. It's apparently a BFD here in Philly.
