Three Reasons Not to Eat Fish

With a hat tip to the Twitterin' Mary Martin of Animal Person, I give you this smart, short video on the fish issue, which I'd not seen before last night:

Thanks for the mention! For most people, fish is the final flesh to eschew. But when you think about all of the bycatch and the way the fish die and what they're LIVING in, it almost seems like they should leave the diet first! But I do understand that we mammals simply find it more difficult to relate to them or see them as like us and therefore worth saving. Videos like this debunk the fish myths.

I used to work in a place where we had a big fish tank. The main attraction was a blow fish named "Hooty". I swear that fish was human! He would follow us as we walked by, he was so friendly. His little face had a little smile. I know it sounds crazy, cuz I've never thought much about fish before, but Hooty changed my mind.

Ah yes... even when I thought I was a sensitive soul; a pescetarian with a "tender heart"... I went on many boats to hook these sea animals.  I managed to ignore my inner voice that felt sorry each time a fish was captured.  They were "only" fish right?

As quickly as they could be released from the barbed hook inside their bleeding mouths - they were thrown into the cooler (for a "quick" death).  I could hear them flapping about, sometimes for minutes in their struggle to live.  I also heard their cries.  Oh yes... fish do make vocal croaks and loud screams in protest of their pain.

This fell on deaf ears before... when I choose to view them as "only" fish.  But I do hear fishes cry now... even on dry land; thanks to a vegan heart. :)

And I think it's no accident that so many families (and dad's) take their kids out on "fishing trips".  It's the first indoctrination that makes it "fun" to kill animals.  It sets the precedent for future acts of unkindness to "other" creatures. All done with parental approval and encouragement - adult's "set the hook" regarding children's apathy towards their fellow earthlings... No wonder "sea food" is the last thing awareness penetrates.

Great video.  As a vegetarian, I get asked many times if I eat fish.  I've even gotten into disputes with those who don't believe that fish are meat.  We'll they're not a vegetable or fruit! They are scientifically classified in the Animal Kingdom.

The way the ocean is abused, people taking more than they need, sea turtles and marine mammals drowning in nets, whaling, shark fin soup, cooking these creatures alive, plus pollution, and on and on.

Fish are actually intersting creatures, some are social, some dangerous, some are really crazy looking, but they are all perfectly adapted to thier environment thru thousands and thousands of years of evolution, why would anyone want to destroy them is beyond me.
