The Tortoise at Woodstock
Published September 09, 2009 @ 03:14PM PT
Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary has a new temporary resident. Check out his adorableness (short story below the video):
From Woodstock:
Ciyalana or "Ciya" (pronounced See Ya!) is a 20 pound African Spurred Tortoise who was abandoned in a NYC park about 4 years ago. He is estimated to be 11 years old, with a life expectancy of 70-80 years! Why is a non-farm animal here at the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary? His permanent home, the Lower East Side Ecology Center in Manhattan, is undergoing major renovations over the next year, and we've agreed to provide a loving foster home for this little guy in the meantime.

Wow, that is a happy tortoise! He really went to town on that kale. I'm so glad he's found a good foster home (and permanent home as well).

He is a real cutie! Thanks for sharing this. I really enjoyed the recent story on CNN as well about a tortoise who hangs out at a mission in Louisville, Kentucky: http://www.notonesparrow.com/blog/2009/7/31/turtles-on-the-town.html

What a wonderful video and story!
(Though I have to admit, I was saying "watcha fingers!!" during pretty much the entire kale-chomping scene. Chomp!)

Last Saturday I was visiting family in Saratoga Springs and my meat-eating brother-in-law kindly offered to take a couple hours off from paperwork catch-up at the office to bring me to the Vegetarian Expo at the City Center. We stopped at the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary booth and talked for a while with the nice young man who was manning it. I wish Ciya had been in attendance (there were some rescued Greyhounds and a mini pony and mini mule there). He's one blessed tortoise!
