Marc Bekoff on Animals, Animal Emotions, Science, and More

Published May 22, 2009 @ 07:50AM PT

I adore Marc Bekoff. He's a brilliant biologist and ethologist, a compassionate and dedicated animal advocate, and a compelling author. I've been moved and educated by his books, and by chance, I was lucky enough to be one of the copyeditors on the wonderful four-volume Encyclopedia of Human-Animal Relationships he edited a few years ago. This video marks the first time I've actually had the chance to see him speak, even via video. Watch.

Love it! Anytime someone talks about "what" they are going to eat for dinner I'm going to be like you mean "who" - excellent argument!

Nancy, if you aren't able to drink calcium-fortified soy milk, one choice would be calcium-fortified orange juice.  I get a calcium-fortified rice milk.  Any of those have as much calcium as milk.
(I like the taste of rice milk better than soy.  So that's what I generally buy, and use on my cereal.)

There are a lot of green veggies that are high in calcium. This site has some information: http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/calcium.htm

As for vegan cheese, that's a matter of personal taste.  I found a few that are decent on pizza -- because they melt and have no taste to detract from the other toppings.  I also found a good tasting vegan parmesan substitute.  Other than that, I don't bother looking anymore.

I dont know, if you came across articles about a scientist who got as well the Nobel Price- a doctor
well he conducted a research and find out that milk is actually the cause of osteoporosis. Bcs after the second wold war the milk industry was developing and they made this program called "milk for the schools" so they provided free milk in schools and told people how important it was to drink a lot of milk. All this generations are the ones with osteoporosis today.
Milk especially cows milk - is too heavy for us after the first year and the milk of our mother. After breastfeeding no need for milk anymore.  What it does is to stay in the stomach and in order to be able to integrated it uses actually all the calcium in the body.  So, woman who are pregnant and drink milk...have various problems.
Thats also the reason they say drink milk if you cant sleep.  You get so tired....so you fall asleep....knock out argument
