In the Blogs: Fish Issues, High Rises, Leftists, Leather, and Non-Vegan Cookbooks

I accidentally did it again--let two weeks instead of one pass before doing an Animals in the Blogs roundup. So to keep this list from being too out of control, I'll give you the first part of the list today (from the previous week) and the second tomorrow (from this more recent past week). And look--commentary this time!
On Why I Pick on the Left from Animal Person: "Leftists are supposed to be the people who do notice where, how and why various kinds of oppression and exploitation cross paths. They're supposed to be the people who have figured out that the entire system is rigged against the weak and less wealthy. And those unable to speak for themselves." Read it, non-AR-supporting Leftists.
The Underbelly of Horse Racing from Animal Blawg: Want a quick overview with the basic, disturbing facts about horse racing? Look no further.
-Much more after the jump-
Life and Death in a Cup from Advocacy for Animals: I'm glad someone's writing about this, whether from a rights standpoint, a welfare standpoint, or any point in between--I had to step into a PetsMart a couple weeks ago, and I noticed the bettas in those tiny cups for the first time; it was horrifying.
Building with Animals in Mind from the Liberation BC Blog: A high-rise habitat for animals? Yup.
A New Vegan Cookbook (Just Not Really Vegan) from My Face Is on Fire: When you go to read this post, be sure to read the comments. The author of this infuriating book-you-should-not-buy defensively chimed in (and did herself no favors).
Protecting Your Rights While Fighting for Theirs from Vegan Soapbox: A roundup of organizations activists should be aware of--it's possible you'll need their help at some point.
Shattering the Meat Myth: Humans Are Natural Vegetarians from Huffington Post (Kathy Freston): Has this post ever been making the rounds on Facebook and Twitter since it went up! Go see why.
Unfriendly NABRs from Animals & Society Institute: Taking a look at deceptive pro-vivisection propaganda.
Animal Rights, Ecofeminism, and Rooster Rehab at OpEd News: An interview with pattrice jones about the Eastern Shore Sanctuary's work and move. (You may recall this related post on this blog: "The Rescuing of Roosters--Even the Fighters.")
On the Eating of Seafood from Animal Person: Mary and I share a pet peeve (OK, if you've been reading this blog for a while, you actually know that we share multiple similar pet peeves and opinions)--the promotion, in light of the plight of fish and the oceans, of eating the "right kinds" of fish when there's a simpler, more obvious, and more effective solution: don't eat fish, period.
Ethics of Veterinary Association Fishy from Digging through the Dirt: Speaking of fish, here's another classic "What the hell?" moment courtesy of our friends at the not-so-animal-friendly American Veterinary Medical Association.
PETA to Hermes: Leather Isn't a "Luxury" from PETA Files: This post quotes an executive as saying this about the company's leather bags (prepare to be horrified): "It can take three to four crocodiles to make one of our bags so we are now breeding our own crocodiles on our own farms, mainly in Australia."
Guess Who's Really at the Bottom of the Shitpile? from I, Bonobo: In case you missed it when I linked to it a few days ago, go check out this excellent post in response to some stuff happening at Feministing.

The Huffington Post article is a great rebuttal to those who tell me I'm living an unnatural lifestyle that will kill me through bad health.
Yup. I'm still waiting for that broccoli induced heart disease to kick in.

Thanks for writing about the post from "My Face Is on Fire." It's incredible that a book targeted toward vegans would criticize them and advocate animal flesh. And the author's response is unbelievable.

Thanks for helping to spread the word about Pat Crocker's book. Skimming through forums across the internet, I've already found comments from vegans who purchased the book and then regretted having done so because of her lauding of the consumption of fish (as well as for suggesting honey as a sweetener). I've also been reading (although I don't know this for certain) that she perpetuates the outdated belief in the need for vegans to combine proteins.
It's a shame that in her response to my blog post, she refused an opportunity to address legitimate concerns, but instead chose to thumb her nose at vegans.
